Acme Brick, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, was founded in 1891 and produces and distributes building materials for its construction customers in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. It operates more than 20 brick manufacturing plants, and additionally manufactures all-brick wood burning fireplace systems. Acme Brick operates a family of companies, including American Tile Supply (residential, commercial and natural stone tiles), Featherlite (masonry materials), IBP Glass Block Grid System (glass blocks set in custom-made aluminum grids) and Texas Quarries (limestone).

In 2022, Scott Moran, the Manager of Enterprise IT Systems was tasked with replacing their eLearning solution Oracle UPK as it would become unsupported by Oracle at the end of the year and Acme needed materials to support their employee base using IT Applications such as JD Edwards. Acme had been using UPK for nearly 20 years and had nearly 500 UPK Topics to convert. Moran considered tools such as Ancile uPerform, Datango & Camtasia, but settled on Epilogue Opus and was assisted through the selection process by their internal UPK Team.

Moran focused on salvaging UPK content, and wanted all educational, end user support and change content for their JDE installation, evolving to have all employees become self-sufficient in ongoing creation and support in Finance, Human Resources and Supply Chain Management. Moran knew that one of the most important aspects was the ongoing, easy maintenance and consumption of that content for those JDE areas for all their business units.

Having used Oracle UPK extensively for 20 years, Acme Brick were able to implement Epilogue Opus in under 3 weeks in 2023 and are planning to have Business Units’ Subject Matter Experts creating content in Opus : as Acme Brick continue progressive change management and change communications. Looking forward with Opus there are no restrictions to any other IT Applicatio.

Acme Brick also looked at other solutions including Adobe Suite, Whatfix, TTS, Ancile uPerform, Datango and Epilogue Opus, and states “We took advise the UPK experts at Epilogue and tested all offerings thoroughly, and because Opus could salvage and convert our UPK content in bulk, and now is 100% web based with Opus stored in one location via AWS, as well as the ability to use the Opus Content Library as an LCMS, the decision was straightforward”. Moran continues “Opus allows us to have a lean content development process, using the SMEs to author the content, then my Team reviews, edits and publishes from one screen and all the Opus outputs are updated : the Opus Solution saved our UPK lives“ Moran continues “Opus was also the clear choice on UPK conversion, in testing and security. In fact, some of the competitors we looked at to Opus do not have a UPK converting process, which was a major factor for Acme Brick”.

Moran continues “The Acme Brick IT Team are focused on keeping all the system data and information safe, and our due diligence for the thousands of end users meant that the IT Team were involved at every step”.

As a result of the 2019 acquisition of the Stuart Olson, Inc., Bird embarked on a technology-enabled transformation program, standardizing and modernizing its application portfolio across all of its businesses.  Project Beam was initiated in the latter part of 2020 and has been running in high gear ever since. As part of this initiative, there was a need to produce educational, end-user support and change content for all their new IT Applications across all business units. The focus was on having all employees become self-sufficient on support in Core Operations, Finance, and Supply Chain Management.
Project Beam required a significant change-management, training and education effort, and a Digital Adoption Platform was needed to support the effort.  Bird explored various solutions, drawing upon “advice from our long-standing partners, including our trusted System Integrators. After thorough testing of all offerings, the decision was straightforward. With Opus offering a fully web-based platform and centralized storage via AWS, alongside its capacity to function as an LCMS through the Opus Content Library, the choice was clear.” Opus’ ease of use, just-in-time training and support, and centralized content were key factors in Bird’s decision.
Having used various tools extensively as part of Organizational Control Management, the Bird Team implemented Epilogue Opus in under 3 weeks in the spring of 2023. Likewise, numerous Subject Matter Experts created a variety of new content in Opus, in addition to recycling existing Bird content. The Opus Content Library boasts a diverse range of formats, from Books and Documents to PDFs and Simulations, serving as a testament to the Beam Team’s proficiency in change management and communications. Looking forward with Opus, no restrictions to any other IT Applications are expected as the organization grows.
Additionally, “Opus allows us to have a lean content development process, leveraging subject matter experts (SMEs) to author content, followed by thorough review, editing, and seamless publication by the Beam Team – all from a single interface, ensuring all Opus outputs remain consistently updated.” The Beam leadership stated: “Opus was also the clear choice on support and responsiveness, in testing and IT security, which were all factors for Bird.” As a result, Bird quickly created over 40 Core Processes in Opus, with plans for further expansion, including integrating into Bird People and Culture HR to extend into areas such as Health and Safety.
At Bird, The IT Security Team is focused on keeping all the system data and information safe, and our due diligence for the thousands of end users meant that the IT Teams were heavily involved at every step. Bird also plans to utilize Opus on laptops and Tablet PCs throughout the business units.

“Opus was also the clear choice on support and responsiveness, in testing and IT security, which were all factors for Bird”

Opus is viewed as an integral part of our training program – taking thousands of people through training of our core processes which is how we run our multi-billion dollar company”

The Bird Leadership Team during the first IT deployment cited Opus as a critical success factor in making sure the team knows how to do things accurately, stating “Opus has helped our teams understand how to run the business, day or night.” Project Beam started off with a pilot of the full solution on 4 Projects in November of 2023 with subsequent phases slated for 2024. Notably, Bird is poised to leverage Opus, with plans to integrate it into nearly 100 projects upon their implementation.
